- 1899 – Southern Railway in the United States inaugurates the Piedmont Limited passenger train service.[1]
- 1914 – George Westinghouse, American inventor; developed the Westinghouse air brake, dies (b. 1846).
- 1917 – The Pere Marquette Railroad is reincorporated as the Pere Marquette Railway.
- 1924 – Electrification is completed on what is now Hamburg S-Bahn's Line 1 between Ohlsdorf and Poppenbüttel (pictured).
