Franklin B. Gowen
- 1889 – Franklin B. Gowen (pictured), president of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad 1866–1883, dies of a gunshot wound in Washington, D.C. (b. 1836); questions remain as to whether this was a suicide or a revenge killing by members of the Molly Maguires.
